Luxor offers a wide range of competitive economic activities.
Luxor already has an active agricultural sector due to its optimum climate, and is specialized in the cultivation of tomatoes, sugarcane, grapes, bananas, mangoes, dates, corn/maize and medical/aromatic plants such as hibiscus.
Luxor is already home to two industrial zones; Boghdadi (311 acres) in the center of the governorate; and New Tiba (382.71 acres) to the North. Both industrial zones are well-connected to Luxor International Airport, roads and railways, thus offering investors direct access to all of Upper Egypt, the Red Sea and international destinations through a broad range of reliable transport options. These zones are currently under-utilized, but are being readied to become more attractive for investment. This is supported by competitive labor costs and a transforming education system that stands ready to supply an attuned-to-business workforce.
Furthermore, there are a number of major industrial activities within proximity that can be clustered around such as the sugar factories in Armant, south of Luxor as well as the sugar processing, paper/cardboard manufacturing and cement plants in neighboring Qena.
Leveraging Luxor’s unique resources and potential linkages with local, national and international markets, a comprehensive Business Opportunity Mapping was conducted, under the leadership of UNIDO,[1] to identify opportunities with the highest social and economic returns and positive environmental impact within the sustainable agriculture and food production, waste management, and sustainable energy sectors, and provide interested investors with market data. The identified business opportunities have the potential to increase value added and returns through small and large-scale innovation. Fifty-six opportunities have been assessed and are showcased in the present website.
Luxor’s worldwide reputation as the tourism capital of Egypt has unparalleled brand value. It is known for being the ‘world’s largest open-air museum’ with over a third of the ancient world’s ruins located on its grounds. This had mobilized major capital into the creation of local services such as hospitality, conference centers, etc. which can equally serve the business community as it does for tourism.
Luxor’s burgeoning and tight-knit innovation ecosystem is materializing as a community that fosters home-grown solutions and networks. Its connectivity, receptivity to international partnerships and availability of excellent hotels and conference venues, is setting up Luxor to deliver business success.
